In high school she was involved in many activities including volleyball, basketball, softball, track and field, also playing the flute and picallo in concert band and the alto sax in jazz band, including many other activities and clubs.

From there she went to a junior college in Idaho for two years, then moving on to Brigham Young University Hawaii to be with her Polynesian boyfriend. Soon after graduating with a bachelors begree in exercise sport science, she got a job at Gold’s Gym Honolulu, Hawaii. There she was approached by trainer Debbie Bullman, who advised her to compete. Kristi's first competition was Ms. Hawaiian Hurricane in 2001 which included obstacle course and a two piece figure round. She won both rounds and decided that she had the potential for fitness and figure career.

Tauti then continued competing in Hawaii then went to the 2003 NPC Team Universe in New York.
